Facilities Design
The Taproot Foundation has partnered with “The 1%" program of Public Architecture to provide the tools to ensure nonprofits have a work environment that is aligned with their mission. Like the Taproot Foundation, Public Architecture is itself a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
The 1% program launched by Public Architecture in 2005 enables nonprofits to connect with hundreds of leading architecture firms that are committed to pro bono service. It is important to understand that Public Architecture is independent of the Taproot Foundation and takes less of a hands-on approach.
These firms’ pro bono service offerings compliment the Taproot Foundation’s Service Grants and increase your impact:

Typical Projects
- Facilities Needs Assessment
Are you experiencing challenges with your office space, but aren’t sure exactly what they are, how to fix them, or what they will be in six months? Work with an architecture firm to assess how your facilities accommodate your staff, programs, brand, culture, resources, and anticipated growth.
- Capital Campaign Materials
Have you completed a needs assessment and are you ready to launch a capital campaign to raise funds for a new facility or renovation? Funders are more likely to support a project they can visualize and get excited about by understanding what the facility will look like, how it will impact your capacity, and what it will cost. Work with an architecture firm to create compelling graphic materials to build the case for your campaign.
- Building & Space Identification
Have you outgrown your office space? Did your needs assessment determine that you need a new facility? Partner with an architecture firm to visit and analyze potential spaces, helping you select one that fits your needs – either for lease or purchase. Your firm can also assess the feasibility of sharing space with other nonprofits or entities.
- Interior Design & Brand Integration
Does a visitor’s first impression of your office align with your brand? Effectively conveying your mission through your physical space is likely to make everyone feel more comfortable and engaged. Work with an architecture or design firm to improve the way your space communicates your brand, reflects your culture, and meets your operational needs.
- Accessibility & Code Compliance
Does your office accommodate people with disabilities and meet similar building codes? Ensure that your office space doesn’t restrict your pool of potential clients and staff. Work with an architecture firm to evaluate your office’s accessibility in order to identify needed changes.
- Healthy & Sustainable Environments
Is your office a healthy place for the people that use it and for the environment? Architecture and design firms can help you address issues such as ergonomics, energy efficiency, and overall sustainability to ensure you have a healthy work environment that doesn’t adversely impact the environment.
- Facilities Renovation
Have you secured a new facility and need to complete a build-out? Are you looking to renovate your existing space to adjust for additional staff or a new program? Work with an architecture firm to design a new configuration for your space – including where walls, doors, windows, and furniture will be needed. Your firm can also make recommendations for general contractors and assist you throughout the construction process.
