People of Pro Bono: Bill Tucker

Read how a marketing professional is using his 40+ years of experience to support the inspiring missions of nonprofits.
Jan 14th, 2016 People of Pro Bono, Service Area: Marketing, Volunteer Consulting

Bill Tucker is a traveler and seeker of ultimate gastronomical and entertainment experiences. He’s also got nearly 40 years of business and communications expertise, which he’s used when delivering over 1,000 hours of pro bono service.

Tangible solutions and executable end results

My particular strength is focusing on tangible solutions and providing executable end results. I like to simplify the process and bring together people with diverse backgrounds and ideas and help shape them into deliverables we hadn’t thought of before. I do pro bono because I have the business skills that nonprofits typically don’t have and instead of having my skills lay dormant, I use them to help strengthen and sustain nonprofits. I can apply a lifetime of knowledge and expertise in a short period of time to help that organization better deliver opportunities and possibilities to people in need.

New tool for fundraising

A pro bono engagement I’m particularly proud of is developing the first ever annual report for the Drew Child Development Corporation (DCDC) located in the Watts section of Los Angeles. DCDC manages educational centers for at-risk children and needed help crafting a new communications/fundraising tool. We were able to capture their DNA by photographing real people in real settings, identifying DCDC’s singular voice, and articulating their brand and value to the community. We delivered an annual report presenting DCDC in a new and more vibrant way.

When people ask me what pro bono is, I say it’s your opportunity to use what you know and do well to help strengthen the nonprofit world. It’s not volunteering in the traditional sense of working the 10K fundraiser; it’s applying your skills to an organization that probably can’t do what you can, and helping create organizational sustainability that will have a larger community reach and impact than you can likely have as an individual.

Join the movement, meet new people, do great work, and get hooked on the power of your impact!
