People of Pro Bono:
Mar 15th, 2017 People of Pro Bono, Service Area: Marketing, Volunteer Consulting

When Soek isn’t practicing her communication expertise, she is seeking out new food trucks, restaurants, and all kinds of eateries. She will travel to the ends of the earth to experience a new cuisine. Soek has also donated 500 hours of pro bono services.

Why I enjoy being a pro bono consultant

When asked about pro bono, I say donating money is not the only way to help and support causes you care about – you can give back with your time and expertise. My favorite part of doing pro bono is learning about and being inspired by the amazing work of nonprofit staff.

When doing pro bono, I bring with me communications experience from both the corporate and nonprofit worlds, and from an international background and a global outlook. I bring the savvy needed to figure out what stories make sense for which audience, the  creativity to deliver them, and the rigor to measure and adjust.

A pro bono engagement I’m particularly proud of was developing a communications strategy and outreach plan for a nonprofit to increase their volunteer base. My heart goes out especially to organizations focused on youth, specifically on women and girls, and working in issues like health, education, and economic empowerment.

To people considering doing pro bono, I say just do it! Start small and go from there. It’s rewarding and fun!
