Giving Tuesday, created in 2012 in response to the shopping-centered days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, is a day that encourages people to give back to nonprofits and their communities. The idea is that after people have spent money shopping, they may spend money giving to others. Since its inception in New York’s 92nd Street Y, Giving Tuesday has become a global phenomenon, with nonprofit organizations using the day’s recognized focus on giving to fundraise, reach financial goals, and use creative tactics to encourage donations.
This Giving Tuesday, Taproot suggests a different way to give back: skills-based volunteering.
Volunteering your professional skills to a nonprofit is a fantastic way to celebrate generosity. While financial donations are typically the focus of Giving Tuesday, donating your skills and time is a powerful way to give back – especially for nonprofits looking to build out their Giving Tuesday campaigns, whether that is a fundraising strategy, communications, marketing, or more!
How can you give your skills?
Nonprofits on Taproot Plus need your insights and advice for successful campaigns for Giving Tuesday—and beyond! Here are just a handful of one-hour sessions and long-term projects:
First Gen Success
First Gen Success provides dynamic programming and tools to support young girls to become first-generational college students and leaders in their communities. If you’re a communication professional committed to our future female scholars, help brainstorm ways to generate awareness and support during their Giving Tuesday fundraising campaign.
International Talent Academy
International Talent Academy seeks to empower students to discover their creative talents and accelerate cognitive development while doing so. By providing high-quality programming for children, International Talent Academy seeks to promote early arts education and healthy brain development. This month, International Talent Academy is looking for a volunteer knowledgeable about social media for their holiday fundraising campaigns.
JackTrip Foundation
JackTrip Foundation hopes to foster the innovation and adoption of Network Arts, through education, community-building, and grantmaking. JackTrip Foundation is seeking support with its public relations strategies and implementation for Giving Tuesday, specifically with a focus on reaching outside its initial communities to a wider audience.
NowNet Arts
Are you a public relations professional? NowNet Arts is a nonprofit arts organization that uses contemporary technology as an artistic medium. Founded in 2017, NowNet Arts is a growing organization that seeks to leverage the operations infrastructure they have created into their next phase: expanding outreach and impact through public relations strategies. Help NowNet Arts develop a PR strategy for Giving Tuesday this November!
Patrick’s Kids Foundation
Patrick’s Kids Foundation is a nonprofit organization and scholarship program dedicated to helping close the education gap faced by Haitian children, many of whom have little formal education. The foundation’s goal is to create a comprehensive, cross-channel fundraising campaign for Giving Tuesday.
Stars and Stripes Dog Rescue
Stars and Stripes Dog Rescue trains “at risk” shelter dogs to become service dogs (at no cost) to military veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD.) They would appreciate support from a skilled volunteer to develop a Giving Tuesday marketing/social media campaign to attract fosters, sponsors, and donations.
And remember, nonprofits need your help year-round, not just on giving Tuesday.
