Across the United States, family and friends will gather this week at picnics, cookouts, reunions, and other get-togethers to celebrate the Fourth of July. Besides the hot dogs and fireworks, Independence Day is an important opportunity to reflect on our relationship to the nation and what patriotism means in each of our lives.
Since the founding of our country, public service has been a central ideal in American life. As President Kennedy famously said, we are called to ask ourselves “what we can do for our country,” and as we answer this call to action, volunteerism is a vital way to serve the communities we call home.
Creating Sustainable Impact
At Taproot, we’ve seen firsthand how skilled volunteering can have far-reaching effects on social good organizations and nonprofits. At a recent Social Issue Spotlight webinar, Pallavi Abraham of Teachers Supporting Teachers shared how the organization enlists a Taproot volunteer each year to create their annual report.
“That annual report is what helps us bring in donations every year. I walk around pounding the pavement with a beautifully printed copy that our volunteers made for us, and our donors and our larger community is always so impressed by that. It makes our organization look that much more committed to the cause because of that support from the community we got from Taproot.”
Pallavi’s experience drives home that in addition to being a great opportunity to talk about their work over the past year, Teachers Supporting Teachers’ annual report actually facilitates raising more money and becoming more financially sustainable. And that fundraising is made possible because of the pro bono service of a volunteer designer.
Patriotism in Action
Skilled volunteerism is a bridge that brings people together, creates understanding, and yields lasting impact on the issues facing our communities. We won one revolution in the 1700s—let’s work together to usher in the next revolution for social change.
This Fourth of July, celebrate the ideal of giving back. It’s the American way.
