HR Assessment And Recommendations
We’re looking for support from an experienced HR professional to conduct an organizational HR assessment and provide actionable recommendations. Our nonprofit has grown rapidly—from 1 to 25 employees in under four years—and we know our current HR policies, structures, and practices need to evolve with us. The project would include reviewing our employee handbook, internal policies (such as PTO, leave, performance reviews), onboarding/offboarding processes, and benefits communication. The volunteer would help us identify gaps, assess compliance, and recommend improvements that align with both legal requirements and best practices for mission-driven workplaces. Topics we would like to cover include:
HR Foundations (Job Descriptions, Employee Handbook, Personnel Files, etc.).
Performance Management (Documentation, Coaching, Reviews, Formal Complaints, Terminations)
Recruitment and Hiring (Application Screening & Selection, Interviews, Selection, Background Checks, Offers, New Hire Onboarding, etc.)
Leaves of Absence and ADA (PLO, OFLA, FMLA, OSL, etc.)
Compensation and Pay Equity (Comp Structure, Comp management, Pay Program, Benefits)
Our organization is small but mighty. We intentionally hire individuals who are creative, empathetic, and self-directed, and we’re deeply committed to supporting our staff both psychologically and practically. We believe that begins with a strong, thoughtful employee experience.
From a compliance perspective, we've grown rapidly—from just one employee to 25 in under four years. The policies and procedures that served us in the beginning are no longer sufficient for an organization of our size, and we're working to ensure we’re fully aligned with all relevant laws and best practices.
It’s imperative to us that our employees feel supported and clearly understand their rights, benefits, and internal processes. Burnout is a persistent risk in nonprofit work, and we’re committed to building a comprehensive, holistic experience that allows our team to continue doing meaningful work while maintaining their own well-being and sustainability.
We’ve already laid the groundwork by gathering existing HR documentation and identifying priority areas of concern. Leadership is aligned around the importance of strengthening our HR infrastructure, and staff input has helped surface key issues to address. We’ve know how to make the most of a pro bono engagement—we’ll respect your time, come prepared, and follow through on recommendations. This assessment will directly inform internal planning and policy updates over the coming months.
