My goal for this Taproot Project is to create a unified, powerful mission statement that reflects the Preventive Search and Rescue Initiative’s core purpose: saving lives through prevention, preparation, and education. Over time, I’ve developed several versions of our mission that reflect different stages of our growth such as field rescue, digital education, and community engagement. Now I need a professional communicator to synthesize them into one clear, consistent message. The final version will be used across our website, grant applications, and outreach materials.

The volunteer’s role will be to help identify the strongest phrasing, refine tone and clarity, and ensure the mission statement connects emotionally with both donors and outdoor participants. I will provide all existing materials including the different mission drafts, website copy, and short summaries of our programs so they can see the full picture.
Through working with our organization on this project, the volunteer will support our mission by helping us define a clear and unified message that inspires action and saves lives. A strong mission statement will allow the Preventive Search and Rescue Initiative to reach more hikers, outdoor visitors, and partner groups with prevention-based education.

By clarifying our core message, the volunteer will make it easier for us to communicate our programs, attract funding, and expand outreach across New Jersey, New York, and beyond. Their work will directly support our ability to prevent emergencies before they occur and strengthen public awareness of safety in the outdoors.
My team and I have prepared for this project by compiling all versions of our current mission statements, bylaws, and public-facing materials. We have also outlined PSAR’s goals, programs, and the language that best fits our “Plan, Prepare, Prevent” philosophy. I will be directly available for feedback each week and can give clear, fast input to move the project forward.

The result we want is simple but essential: one mission statement that sounds authentic, consistent, and ready for use across all PSAR Initiative materials.

Organization Mission

Mission and Principles The Preventive Search and Rescue Initiative Inc. (PSAR Initiative) exists to stop emergencies before they happen, protect the environment that sustains us, and keep public lands open for everyone. We believe prevention is the most effective form of search and rescue. Our Three Pillars of Prevention Preventing rescues and injuries in the backcountry We meet people where they are: on the trail, at summits, or at trailheads. We share food or electrolytes, help them rethink their timing, or convince them to turn back before dark. A simple conversation can prevent an emergency, and every incident avoided is a life not put at risk. Preventing environmental damage We build conservation into everything we do. Trash left behind attracts wildlife and often leads to animals being relocated or euthanized. Off-trail shortcuts erode fragile ground. Accidents in sensitive areas push regulators to close entire sections of land. Closures hurt local communities and small businesses as well as outdoor users. Picking up trash, staying on trail, and teaching Leave No Trace are all part of prevention. Preventing unpreparedness We help people before they even start. That means teaching seasonal risks, showing what to pack, and making digital resources people can keep on their phones. Many rescues never happen because someone learned what to do before stepping into the woods. Together, these pillars form a prevention triangle. Each side strengthens the others: safe people protect the land, a healthy environment reduces rescues, and preparation reinforces both.
