Help us strengthen our nonprofit accounting and financial management practices! We are looking for a volunteer finance professional to assess our budget tracking systems and overall accounting practices.

We are a fiscally sponsored project of two different fiscal sponsors; one houses our c3 work and the other our c4 work. Because of this, while we track our income and expenses from an operations and development standpoint, there is a gap in our accounting knowledge that is preventing us from having a total understanding of our finances (especially regarding our funds that rollover from year to year such as our reserves, multi-year grants, etc.).

We predict that this finance project will take at least 30 hours to complete, though it may be flexible based on the need determined. We're hoping that our pro bono partner will share three to five hours of their time each week with our team. Ideally, you will be working with our operations and development staff to train them so that they are able to do this accounting work independent of a third party.
Through this project, the volunteer will support our organization’s health and longevity by supporting our operations and development directors with some nonprofit finance and accounting support. This support will be particularly meaningful at our 10 year anniversary and in the wake of a complicated fiscal sponsorship transition.
To prepare for this project, we have gathered our budgeting information and will share access to our financial management tools. We plan to implement the recommendations of this project by having our development and operations team both completely bought in and ready to implement effective systems long term.

Organization Mission

NY Renews is a multi-sector climate, jobs, and justice coalition of nearly 400 organizations creating a path to a 100% clean energy economy in New York State. NY Renews brings together frontline communities, environmental justice and base-building organizations, labor unions, faith communities, small businesses, and more, to ensure that our communities lead the way through a just energy transition. Grounded in the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing and in our coalition’s own Points of Unity, the coalition centers the leadership of people of color and those most impacted by the climate crisis. NY Renews was the force behind the passage of New York’s 2019 Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA or “climate law”), which sets a national precedent in creating a legal framework for a just transition to a clean energy economy that centers communities. NY Renews collaborates with our organizational members to: - Eliminate all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions in NYS by 2050 - Accelerate the transition to clean energy in all sectors of the economy, including power generation, transportation, housing, and commercial buildings - Ensure that clean energy funding is invested in environmental justice and low-income communities and communities of color - Protect workers and communities impacted by the transition to clean energy while ensuring high-road labor standards in the new economy, and - Ensure that frontline communities are at the forefront of proposed solutions to the climate crisis and directly benefit from a just transition to clean energy.
