Create a Casting Toolkit and Audition Framework for Nonprofit Production
The volunteer will create a reusable casting toolkit designed for youth-led film productions at a nonprofit serving teen filmmakers ages 14 to 24. The deliverable includes a complete audition facilitation guide, 3 customizable casting call templates (for short film, documentary, and series formats), an actor evaluation rubric, a callback process document, and a step-by-step casting workflow that teen directors and adult mentors can follow together. All materials will be formatted in Google Docs for easy sharing and adaptation across programs.
Scope of work: Audit our current informal casting approach across existing youth film programs. Develop age-appropriate audition facilitation guidelines that prioritize a safe, encouraging environment for young performers. Create casting call templates with inclusive language standards and distribution recommendations. Design an evaluation rubric that balances craft with storytelling instinct. Build a callback and role-assignment workflow document. Deliver a 30-minute walkthrough session with our team on how to implement the toolkit.
The ideal volunteer is a casting director or casting associate with experience in independent film, educational media, or community-based productions, and who values creating space for young people to take creative risks. This project should take 15 to 25 hours to complete. We are hopeful that our volunteer partner will share 2 to 5 hours of their time per week.
A professional casting toolkit changes that. It gives a 15-year-old director in San Diego the same structured, inclusive process that a working indie filmmaker would use. It teaches young performers that their voice and presence matter enough to be evaluated with care. And it ensures that the stories coming out of programs like PolyNation and Mission Ineffable are cast with intention, not just convenience.
When we say "Stories that Travel," we mean stories that are crafted at every level, including who gets to be on screen. This toolkit will directly shape which young faces and voices audiences see when our films screen at festivals, community theaters, and partner venues across the country. For teens who rarely see themselves reflected in media, being thoughtfully cast in a student film can be the moment everything shifts.
The volunteer will work directly with our Founder and CEO, who oversees all program design, along with our Head of Events and Partnerships, who coordinates production logistics. Weekly check-ins will be scheduled at the volunteer's convenience, and feedback turnaround will be within 48 hours.
Once complete, the casting toolkit will be embedded into our PolyNation Project (a five-month after-school film production for high school teens) and Mission Ineffable (our six-week summer creative internship), giving every cohort a professional, repeatable process for casting their films.
