About the Opportunity

A set of thematic maps that combine U.S. Census demographic layers with our internal location data (for example, home daycare sites), plus cleaned data exports and a short methodology note. Tool choice and interactivity level can be discussed with volunteers.

Mapped demographic insights will help identify neighborhoods with the greatest need for nature access and early childhood nature programming, guiding outreach, site selection, and urban greening to expand equitable access to nature for children. Mapping will directly inform strategic planning.

We will provide the list of target neighborhoods, data types and sources, and make staff available for regular check-ins. Volunteers will help define exact datasets, geographic units, and visualization formats during the kickoff.

Organization Mission

The research is clear: nature makes kids healthier, happier, and smarter. Spending time outdoors, in nature, is essential for children’s healthy development. Our goal is nature in every neighborhood and every park, to ensure all children in our city have access to outdoor spaces where they can learn, play, and grow. We are committed to strengthening efforts to advance equity in access to nature by increasing opportunities for nature-rich recreation and expanding nature programming at our early childhood centers, schools, and community centers. We also advocate for urban greening as an environmental and community health strategy.
