About the Opportunity

We would like to partner with a skilled social media professional to help strengthen and expand JoinJeremy's digital presence. Our goal is to develop a more cohesive and effective social media strategy that amplifies the voices of incarcerated journalists and writers while increasing awareness of our mission and programs.

Specific areas where we would appreciate assistance include reviewing our current social media platforms, creating branded templates and graphics, developing content ideas and recurring campaigns, and creating a 1–3 month content calendar. We are particularly interested in highlighting incarcerated journalists, promoting articles and podcast episodes, launching a "Meet Our Team" campaign, and developing strategies for short-form video and social media engagement.

Because our team is small and volunteer-driven, we are looking for practical recommendations, content assets, and sustainable systems that we can continue using after the project concludes. The volunteer's work will help us reach new audiences, grow community engagement, and further our mission of empowering incarcerated journalists through storytelling, media, and advocacy.

JoinJeremy's mission is to empower incarcerated journalists and writers by amplifying their voices and expanding the reach of their work. Social media is one of the most powerful tools we have to connect these voices with the public, increase awareness of important issues within the criminal legal system, and build support for incarcerated creators.

This project will help us create a more consistent, engaging, and strategic social media presence that highlights the work of incarcerated journalists, promotes articles and podcast episodes, showcases advocacy initiatives, and strengthens connections with supporters, volunteers, and partner organizations. A stronger social media presence will allow us to reach new audiences, increase engagement, and create more opportunities for incarcerated writers to have their stories heard.

By volunteering on this project, you'll help ensure that important perspectives from inside prison walls reach people on the outside. Your work will directly support storytelling, public education, and advocacy efforts that advance understanding, human dignity, and meaningful criminal justice reform.

Our team is fully committed to strengthening JoinJeremy's social media presence and has identified this as a key organizational priority. We have established social media accounts, existing content, branding materials, articles, podcast episodes, and organizational updates that will be made available to the volunteer. Team members will be available throughout the project to answer questions, provide timely feedback, and collaborate on ideas and implementation.

We have identified several specific goals, including improving consistency across platforms, developing a sustainable content strategy, increasing engagement, highlighting incarcerated journalists and their work, and promoting our podcasts, campaigns, and educational initiatives. We are seeking a volunteer partner who can help us create practical tools and systems that our team can continue using after the project concludes.

Any content templates, recommendations, content calendars, and strategies developed through this project will be actively implemented by our team. We are committed to maintaining and building upon the volunteer's work to increase awareness of our mission, expand our audience, and better amplify the voices of incarcerated journalists and writers.

Organization Mission

Through institutional design and legal obstacles, mainstream media outlets are restricted in reporting firsthand on America’s massive carceral state. Vital information and issues from within US prisons and immigration detention centers remain underreported or entirely ignored. Incarcerated writers and journalists regularly risk censorship and retaliation to share their firsthand experiences and perspectives. They are also systematically excluded from the editorial support, exposure, and professional networks available to others in the industry. While outside journalists often see their work featured across multiple outlets and legacy publications, incarcerated writers rarely have their work published beyond its original source. Incarcerated journalist Jeremy Busby founded JoinJeremy in order to transform this dynamic. We are a collective dedicated to supporting the work of incarcerated journalists and amplifying their voices at this critical moment in history, when protecting free speech is more important than ever. We invite you to join us in uplifting incarcerated journalists and writers as essential contributors to today’s media landscape. We are building multimedia platforms and collaborating with media outlets, community organizations, journalists and activists to fulfill our mission.
