About the Opportunity

We're assembling a small interdisciplinary research team to help develop the first Forest Policy Atlas, an emerging research and cultural project within Forest Encounters.

The Atlas traces the development of legal and policy frameworks shaping commodity markets associated with forest loss—from early national initiatives and market interventions to emerging deforestation-free legislation, procurement policies, corporate tools, and purchasing frameworks.

The challenge is to make this complex policy landscape both legible and actionable. Rather than creating a conventional policy report, we envision the Atlas as a kind of mise en place guide for forest protection: a visually and intellectually compelling resource that identifies the policies, market mechanisms, precedents, and practical tools already available, and shows how they can be connected to specific forest-loss drivers and points of intervention.

The research will begin by mapping relationships between forest-loss drivers, commodities, supply chains, policy interventions, market instruments, actors, and purchasing or procurement decisions. It will include research into national and international precedents—including France’s early deforestation-free commitments and the development of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)—as well as procurement standards, purchasing guides, scorecards, certification systems, due-diligence frameworks, and other implementation tools.

For this first phase of the project, we welcome researchers who can help review and synthesize existing material, identify important gaps and precedents, and begin shaping the narrative and organizational logic of the Atlas. We'll focus this first phase on the French and EUDR frameworks for forest trade reforms.

The project will ultimately serve policymakers, procurement officers, companies, suppliers, chefs, designers, and others seeking practical ways to integrate forest protection into purchasing and supply-chain decisions.

The deliverable for this phase is the research foundation and architecture for the Forest Policy Atlas. The volunteer research team will work collaboratively to produce an organized body of research that can serve as the foundation for the Atlas’s first prototype.

This will include:
* A preliminary chronology and map of key legal and policy developments in forest protection and deforestation-free commodity markets, based on information pulled from collected research.
*Key research into the French and EUDR forest trade reform frameworks to begin content research for the project.
* A structured source library and research bibliography.
* Identification of significant gaps, questions, and areas requiring further research.

Success will look like an organized body of research that will contribute to the overall piece. The eventual complete Atlas is intended to function as both a map of the evolving forest-protection policy landscape and a practical toolkit: helping users identify the instruments available to them and understand how those instruments might be integrated into purchasing, procurement, supply-chain, or policy strategies.

The work will contribute to the development of Forest Encounters and provide the foundation for a larger international Forest Policy Atlas.

Organization Mission

Climate House is a creative think tank using the arts to illustrate actionable pathways forward—and bring them to life. Our Mythos Embodied Climate: Climate change is not the abstract, technical issue it’s often framed to be–but a universal, ambient one experienced through our bodies and daily lives. CH communicates using universal sensory language, to reintegrate our understanding of climate change as real in the felt sense, and as a core defining issue shaping everything around us. Universal Sensory Language: By speaking this universal language of the senses, we can communicate in a language everyone speaks and understands. This helps reframe climate as an everyone issue–providing an opportunity for the general public to reclaim their agency in understanding it and engaging with its solutions creatively, collaboratively, and meaningfully. Culture-First: Culture is the fabric of daily life. CH uses a broad suite of cultural tools to meet people where they are, designing programming that is audience-tailored and culture-first, recognizing this as the carrier oil for engaging with more complex topics. Show-not-tell: Because seeing is believing, we design programs that show, not tell. All of our programs are seared with a blueprint, grounding solutions on the experiential plane, allowing our audience to feel solutions that are so actionable, they can taste them.
