We are preparing to bring on new board members and want to attract the right people with clearly defined roles grounded in what success looks like for us. We do not have descriptions in place yet, since this will be among the first board roles we are formally defining. We see an opportunity to build roles that are clear, relevant, and welcoming to the people we want to attract. We are looking for a volunteer with HR or recruitment experience to help us define and communicate 1–3 key board leadership roles (specifically Board Treasurer and Board Secretary).
Challenge: Currently, operational leadership relies heavily on our Executive Director. Establishing an active, engaged working board is critical to strengthening our oversight, financial management, and long-term sustainability as we scale our sustainable infrastructure programs in East Africa and local outreach drives in Houston.
A practical recruitment strategy for key working board roles—specifically Board Treasurer and Board Secretary—that our team can put into action right away.
The volunteer will:
-Review our organizational mission, governance needs, and current board structure.
-Identify the most important skills, financial background, and governance qualifications needed for success in the Treasurer and Secretary positions.
-Recommend 3–5 targeted candidate sourcing platforms, networks, and outreach channels aligned with those skills (including non-profit board matching tools and community leadership networks).
Final Deliverables:
-Target candidate profiles outlining key competencies and time-commitment expectations for Board Treasurer and Board Secretary roles.
-Four clear, actionable recruitment and outreach tactics to engage qualified candidate pipelines.
-Simple tracking and onboarding guidelines to streamline applicant communication and board orientation.
Success: Having clear, structured materials and a step-by-step strategy to recruit active, dedicated board members who share the operational and governance load with our Executive Director.
