I would like advice on converting my nonprofit’s Excel/Google Sheets tracking into proper accounting software, ideally using a system based on double-entry accounting.

I'm considering Wave since it’s free and nonprofit-friendly, but I’m open to other options that may better suit my needs. I need guidance on how to correctly categorize income and expenses (such as donations, raffle income, event expenses, vet payments, etc.) and how to set up basic nonprofit bookkeeping, including restricted vs. unrestricted funds if necessary.

My nonprofit, Somerset Pet Welfare Alliance, is newly 501(c)(3) certified and run by one person (me). We provide financial assistance for spay/neuter surgeries in Somerset County, Maine. I’ve been managing everything in spreadsheets so far, but I want to move into a more professional system to ensure clean records, make reporting easier, and prepare for future grant applications or IRS requirements.

In this session, I hope to:
-Discuss whether Wave is the right software
-Learn how to structure accounts and categories properly
-Get help importing or setting up data from my spreadsheets
-Understand how to manage income from fundraisers vs. general donations

I am not looking for someone to do the work for me, but to help me get it set up properly so I can maintain it going forward.

Organization Mission

Our mission is to reduce pet overpopulation in Somerset County, Maine by providing financial assistance to help local residents spay and neuter their cats and dogs. We believe every pet deserves a healthy, safe life, and every pet owner deserves access to affordable veterinary care—regardless of income. By focusing on prevention through spay/neuter funding, we aim to keep more animals out of shelters and improve the welfare of pets in our rural communities.
