The nonprofit sector is experiencing a racial leadership gap. To find out why there have been so few leaders of color in the social sector, the Building Movement Project conducted surveys of nonprofit staff members and senior leaders in 2016 (over 4,000 respondents) and 2019 (over 5,000 respondents). The surveys found that people of color had similar educational attainment and training as white respondents; however, respondents across races identified systemic barriers and biases preventing people of color from advancing into leadership roles.
