MPower Girls Camp is a small, 3½-year-old, volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We provide fully funded, life-changing overnight STEM camp experiences and continued STEM activities for underserved elementary-school girls who lack self-confidence.As we apply for larger grants, some funders request independently reviewed or audited financial statements. We do not have a CPA on staff or the financial resources to hire an accounting firm. This limits our ability to pursue funding that could help us serve more girls. Our finances are straightforward. MPGC operates primarily through one checking account with approximately 12–15 transactions per year. We retain our bank statements, receipts and supporting records and have filed three annual Form 990 returns since our founding in 2023.We are seeking a licensed CPA to examine our financial records, determine the appropriate level of independent financial review for an organization of our size and help us produce credible financial documentation for grant applications. We have maintained our records carefully and completed the required tax filings, but we have not previously had an independent CPA review or audit our financial statements. We need professional guidance to make sure our records are accurate, properly organized and ready for review by foundations and other prospective funders.
By the end of this project, we would like to have our financial records independently reviewed—and, if appropriate and feasible, audited—by a licensed CPA.The volunteer CPA will:-Review MPGC’s bank statements, receipts, financial records and three Form 990 filings-Confirm that our income, expenses and account balances are accurately recorded-Identify any missing information, discrepancies or corrections needed-Advise us on whether an audit, financial review or another form of CPA assurance is appropriate for a nonprofit of our size-Help organize our financial information into clear, professional financial statements-Provide a written report, letter or other CPA-prepared documentation that can be included with grant applications-Recommend simple financial recordkeeping practices for future yearsSuccess would mean that MPGC has accurate, independently reviewed financial statements; a clear understanding of any improvements we need to make; and professional financial documentation that strengthens our credibility and allows us to qualify for more grant opportunities.
