People of Pro Bono: Traci Failla

Traci, a PR professional, talks about the joy and purpose that comes from pro bono work.
Oct 19th, 2018 People of Pro Bono, Pro Bono Week, Volunteer Consulting

A public relations and communications pro with a passion for story-telling and service, Traci has always loved working with purpose-driven clients. Now, volunteering through Taproot allows her to keep giving back.

Turning passion into action

I’ve always been excited about the power of language and communication; growing up, I even wanted to be a French interpreter before pursuing communications and journalism in college. Now, as a senior account manager at a PR agency, I get to do what I love every day: writing, narrative strategy, client service, and creative brainstorming.

In a previous position, I had a number of purpose-driven clients. I missed working with nonprofits, so I signed up to do pro bono work with Taproot. I had done pro bono work on my own before, but I found that by Taproot vetting organizations to determine if they were truly ready for pro bono support, I was able to spend less time spinning my wheels and more time moving things forward.

This means that I’m able to focus on the things I love, like my work or preparing for my next trip, while still making a difference. I can volunteer my skills in a way that works best for me—and the nonprofits I work with.

Telling stories that matter

If you’re thinking about volunteering, trust me: doing pro bono work is a valuable experience, and it’s inspiring to know I am making a difference. But know that you have a responsibility, too. Make sure that you can follow through on your commitments. People are counting on you.

To all the nonprofit professionals out there: You do amazing and important work. Your story deserves to be told. Wherever you are in the process—whether it’s figuring out how to articulate your story or how to share it—know that it’s worth the effort to make it happen.
